Setting up a WX5 rig

This tutorial walks through how I have set up my WX5 rig, which consists of:

a WX5, using wireless MIDI
a VL70‑m synth module, with Patchman's Turbo VL chip
a Lexicon MX400 effects processor for reverb/delay, and other effects
a MOTU Audio Express to mix everything together
a Behringer FCB1010 foot controller
a laptop running Ableton Live

Setting up the wireless MIDI

I use MIDIjet's wireless MIDI system, but it introduces a small problem with our rig: we have 2 devices generating MIDI data (the WX5 and the FCB1010 foot controller), but there's only one MIDI input on the VL70‑m.

I use MIDI Solution's merge box, that takes up to 4 MIDI inputs and merges them into a single outputI have an older model than only has one output; the current model seems to have two..

Setup is straight-forward: the FCB1010 goes into the first input (where it also supplies power), and the MIDIjet receiver goes into any of the other inputs.

The output then goes into the VL70‑m's MIDI IN, and everything else works as it did before.
